If You Must Apply for a Visa

• Information on how to apply for a non-immigrant visa.

Telephone Visa Information Service – If you are not able to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for a visa and request a visa interview. Visa interviews are by appointment only. For general information and appointments, please call the Telephone Visa Information Service toll number at 899.34.34.32 (Euro 1.80/min.), open between 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except U.S. and Italian holidays.

If you are calling from a cellphone, please note that only some providers allow this service to be accessible from your cellphone, and that the costs may vary. Please contact your service provider for more information.

Electronic visa application forms can be found at: http://evisaforms.state.gov.

Callers outside of Italy can access the Visa Information Service at (+39) 02-30329656. Each call costs a flat service rate of EURO 15.00 plus the international phone rate that your telephone provider normally charges for calling a number in Italy. This service rate must be charged to either a Visa or MasterCard credit card. Debit or Bancomat cards cannot be used. The service is available to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Italy time, GMT+1), Monday through Friday, except U.S. and Italian holidays.

E-passport An e-Passport contains an embedded, contactless integrated circuit chip that stores a passport holder’s biographic information and biometrics – digitized photographs and finger scans.

E-Passports are part of a multi-layered approach to reduce the widespread use of fraudulent passports without impeding the flow of legitimate trade and travel to the United States. With e-Passports, visitors traveling to the United States under the VWP – approximately 13 million people each year – can transmit their biographic and biometric information quickly, conveniently and securely to readers at U.S. ports of entry. Travelers applying for admission under the Visa Waiver Program are allowed to enter the United States for up to 90 days for business or pleasure without obtaining a non-immigrant visa.

Through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Visa Waiver Program countries spent the last few years working with the United States to test and perfect technical standards making e-Passports interoperable with U.S. readers. More... (148K Adobe Acrobat .pdf brochure)

The Department of State announces the latest step in our continuing effort to facilitate the issuance of visas for legitimate business travelers worldwide. The Business Visa Center, launched in July 2005 to assist businesses in the United States and their partners, customers, and colleagues around the world, is now accessible on the Internet through the Worldwide Business Visa Center pages.

Non-Immigrant Visa Services
If you are not able to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for a visa and request a visa interview. Visa interviews are by appointment only. For general information and appointments, please call the Telephone Visa Information Service toll number at
