O n September 11, 2006, Political and Economic Section Chief Andrea Brouillette-Rodriguez attended the inauguration of a monument in Segrate, near Milan, dedicated to the victims of 9/11. Following the terrorist attacks, the city formed a 9/11 commission, which, among other things, oversaw the building of a monument in one of the city’s parks consisting of two steel replica towers, one topped by an American flag and one topped by an Italian flag.

Roughly 200 residents turned out to witness the inauguration. Mayor Adriano Alessandrini expressed his solidarity with the American people and his gratitude for their endless struggle to bring democracy and peace to the world.

The event was evidence of an important and enduring friendship between the American and Italian people as partners in protecting and promoting the values of liberty and democracy.
