Promoting LGBT and Women’s Rights: On October 4-5, the U.S. Consulate was pleased to support NGO partners Equality Italia and the Harvey Milk Foundation, who hosted a two-day “Cross Atlantic Global Summit” to address human rights and economic growth, with an emphasis on the advancement of LGBT and women’s rights.
Over 40 national and international speakers gathered to address the issues in Palazzo Marini.
Milan Mayor Giuliano Pisapia and Consul General Kyle Scott opened the conference, and the Consul General explained the Obama Administration’s commitment to human rights in general, and the LGBT community in particular.
The keynote speech was delivered by Stuart Milk, nephew of the late Harvey Milk and founder of the Harvey Milk Foundation. Representatives from the Italian federal government, House of Deputies, Senate, and Bocconi University all delivered remarks.
On the evening of October 4, U.S. Consul General Kyle Scott hosted a reception for 80 Italian and interational guests in his home in honor of the LGBT community and the advancement of human rights.
The Consul General took the opportunity to emphasize Secretary of State Clinton’s message of inclusion to an audience that included politicians, entrepreneurs, artists, intellectuals, and journalists. Stuart Milk, nephew of the late Harvey Milk and founder of the Harvey Milk Foundation, also spoke of his memories of his uncle, and his commitment to advancing human rights.
