MEDIA AND PRESS INFORMATION

MEDIA INFORMATION SHEET

From: Public Affairs Offices, U.S. Embassy to Italy and U.S. Embassy to the Holy See.
For: U.S. media coming to Italy.
Subject: Requirements for Entry and Access to Italian and Vatican Sites of Interest.

The information below is subject to possible additions, changes and updates, and is offered here for U.S. media representatives coming to Italy.

Table of Contents
• REGULATIONS FOR FREE IMPORT OF EQUIPMENT
• REGULATIONS FOR FILMING
• FILMING TRAIN STATIONS AND AIRPORTS
•
FILMING MONUMENTS, MUSEUMS, ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES, CHURCHES:
  — ITALY CONTROLLED SITES
  — VATICAN CONTROLLED SITES

REGULATIONS FOR FREE IMPORT OF EQUIPMENT
While no visa is required for brief, business visits, it is necessary to follow the correct procedure for temporary import of professional equipment.

We suggest those who want to film in Italy to subscribe to the ATA Customs Convention. It is the easiest method for bringing professional equipment duty free into the country. The ATA office in New York, tel. (212) 354-4480, can provide the number of the nearest ATA Convention office.

If they decide not to subscribe to the ATA Customs Convention, our office will need to receive, at least three weeks prior to the arrival of the crew, a detailed list of equipment to be temporarily imported, the names of the crew members, the date of arrival and departure, the port of arrival (with airline and flight number), a planned filming schedule, the purpose of the filming (movie, documentary, advertising, etc.). We will then send a Note Verbale to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will issue a permit slip for customs procedures. If a U.S. production opts for the latter method, it is essential that upon leaving the country, the slip be returned to customs to certify the re-exportation of the equipment.

 REGULATIONS FOR FILMING
As a general rule, filming permits are not required in Italy for portable cameras, but if tripods are to be used, an official request must be submitted to the pertinent office in the given municipality where filming will take place, and some cost will be involved. Permits are also required for filming historical monuments or museums. In case of taping sequences in small villages and in the countryside, no official permits are needed.

Electronic News & Field Production, a private film shop in Rome managed by Mr. Enrico Pergolini, who speaks English, could also provide some useful assistance. Electronic News' telephone is 39-06-68808895, fax 39-06-68808859; its e-mail address is electronicnews@tin.it. In addition to providing some logistical help, including vehicles, Mr. Pergolini, cell phone 348-3825685, can give you good advice and useful information.

 FILMING TRAIN STATIONS AND AIRPORTS
Authorization to film inside train stations and airports in Italy will always require a green light from the Central Police Department in Rome. All requests (English language is understood) should be submitted to the attention of Mr. Roberto Sgalla, Chief of Diplomatic and External Relations Bureau, by fax, (39)06.46549681, or e-mail relazioni.est@interno.it. Media applications will be received and processed by Mr. Mario Viola, Galla’s assistant, phone (39)06.46525106, cell 328.1509083, and Viola will inform you about the feasibility of your request. If the police grant permission, the media representative must then apply to the pertinent local authority. The following are procedures and name, phone number and e-mail address (if available) of the manager responsible of the local train station or airport in Turin, Rome and Milan.

Filming at train stations

FILMING MONUMENTS, MUSEUMS, ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES, CHURCHES
We divide sites into 2 categories: those under Italian control and those under Vatican control. For permission to cover a monument, museum or archeological site, or a church, media organizations submit a request, specifying how, where, when and identity of the crew. You should include an explanation of the intended use for the material produced, specifying any intended current or future commercial use. The fee for filming varies by site and intended use. For example: the fee for filming Milan’s Duomo Cathedral varies from minimum 130.00 to maximum 520.00 euros.

Italy Controlled Sites

This category includes two lists of interesting cultural sites. For each site there is the name and phone number of the pertinent authority to contact for permits.

The Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities graciously contributed to this information document.

List One includes the most famous sites. List Two is of less famous sites but culturally very interesting. The Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities is particularly interested in promoting visits on this list. If they are informed in advance of interest in visiting a list two site, the Ministry offers to facilitate access including waiving fees and providing information.
