HEALTH AND MEDICAL INFORMATION
CONTENTS
This is a list of English speaking physicians and dentists, available for private consultation by American citizens in Milan, Turin, Genoa, Venice, Trieste, and Verona, i.e. the largest towns in this consular district. In case you need any information on doctors or medical facilities in other areas within our jurisdiction, please contact the Consulate, or the Italian Medical Association ("Ordine dei Medici") in the area of your interest -- http://portale.fnomceo.it
The Consulate General cannot assume any responsibility as to the quality of the medical services rendered; under no circumstances should the list be considered as an endorsement or a recommendation by the US Government. However, all the doctors listed have excellent reputations, and have at least some knowledge of the English language, although their level of proficiency is not uniform.
HOSPITALS AND CLINICS
A list of major hospitals in Milan, Turin, Genoa, Venice, Trieste and Verona is also provided hereafter.
Medical facilities in Italy are adequate for any emergencies that may arise. Public hospitals are operated by the National Health Service, and charge flat, all-in-one rates that include all medical services, surgery (if required), bed and board.
Residents of Italy who are covered by the National Health Service (and their dependents) will be provided hospital services free of charge. Visitors, or persons not enrolled under the National Health Service plan, are expected to pay hospital charges in full and then claim a reimbursement from their insurance carrier, if applicable. Some hospitals do not take credit cards; sometimes, however, hospitals will agree to bill patients after discharge. There are also a number of private hospitals and clinics offering a wide range of medical services. Charges, although variable, are generally much higher than those applied by public hospitals.
MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
In case of an emergency, head for the nearest hospital. Most general and regional hospitals have emergency rooms, which operate around the clock. To call an ambulance, or if you are in need of immediate medical attention, dial 118 (toll free) from any telephone in Italy.
Help can also be sought through the Police by dialing 113, which is equivalent to 911 in the US.
GENERAL HEALTH INFORMATION
The level of community sanitation is high in Italy. The sewage system is adequate. While there are no unusual features or special health risks, persons suffering from, or susceptible to, allergies or respiratory diseases, may require proper medication.
